A Media Player in digital signage is the device that decodes and renders content on a connected display. The media player executes the signage software, receives playlists from the cloud CMS, decodes video and image assets, manages scheduling and interactivity, and reports back telemetry and proof-of-play data.

Three architectures coexist: external hardware players (BrightSign, Fire TV Stick, Intel NUCs and mini-PCs), SoC players integrated into professional displays (Samsung Tizen, LG webOS, Philips Android, Sharp/NEC), and cloud-rendered endpoints for web-based screens. Livesignage is certified across all three architectures, giving customers complete hardware flexibility — and resellers the freedom to recommend the right device per project.

Use Cases

Media player selection criteria in real deployments:

- Premium retail and corporate: SoC players for clean installation and lower TCO.
- Mission-critical environments (airports, hospitals): industrial external players like BrightSign.
- Quick rollouts and SMB: Android sticks and Fire TV for cost-effective entry.
- Heavy interactivity: more powerful x86 mini-PCs for touch, sensors and real-time data.
- Outdoor and DOOH: industrial-rated players for harsh environments and 24/7 duty.
